Hello again, Where were you when the Euro Soccer Cup kicked off in Basel? The Swiss Embassy and all the Consulates in the U.S hosted kick off game events. In New York, the Consulate General teamed up with ESPN for a Central Park viewing, which was great fun -- except that Switzerland lost the very first game, which was sort of a downer... but hey, there's still the whole tournament for the Swiss team to step up it's game, right? While still on the subject, we've created a whole EURO 08 section, just for you to express your soccer rage (and joy) as well as keep up with soccer news, pool bets, upload your images, win prizes... We encourage you to share your EM08 moments, from coast to coast, stadium to living room, from all around the world. It's your game, play it! Also in this issue: more kids on When I Think of Switzerland, Martin Vosseler's SUNwalk, the talents of Marcel Langenegger, Christian Wassman, Swiss Miss and Tom Kundig. Other news: Swiss Roots is partnering with Concordia Language Villages for their Helvetia Swiss Week. Turtle River Lake near Bemidji in Minnesota is the site of this total language immersion experience for the whole family. Registration is still open, and it's a wonderful opportunity for the family to brush up on their French, Italian and German. May be even a little Romantsch! We'll be back shortly with our special High Summer issue with our Swiss Roots tour/events schedules, profiles of musician Erika Stucky, artist Christine Sefolosha and adventurer/explorer Bertrand Piccard's ambitious plans to fly around the world in a solar powered plane. Stay Tuned! Your Friend, Ms. Helvetia

And so once more the heat descends, and while you reach to turn on that air conditioner, your thoughts no doubt also turn to the escalating energy prices. As this goes out, the price of the U.S barrel has reached an all time high. Yes there's an energy crisis at hand, but also solutions. May we introduce you to Dr. Martin Vosseler, of Basel? Last year Martin Vosseler and a crew of four other Swiss adventurers made a historic crossing of the Atlantic aboard Sun21--a solar powered catamaran. This year Vosseler, a doctor by vocation, decided to take his message of solar power and energy renewal--on foot. Since January (2008) he has been walking across the United States. Helvetica Bold caught up with the itinerant doctor by phone when he spent the night with friends in Beebe, Arizona... READ MORE

Last spring, award winning commercial director Marcel Langenegger's Hollywood directorial debut was released. WASSMANN'S
SENSE
OF
PLACE
| | | |
It's one thing to have the benefit of superstar mentors, a harder thing to emerge beneath from their colossus intact. Christian Wassmann was introduced to the theater impresario Robert Wilson while still a student in Zurich. The result was a ten yearlong mentorship, which spawned a significant number of collaborations. When Wassmann moved to the US, he took a position with master architect Stephen Holl and soon became his protégé. In 2005 Wassmann decided to leave Holl's firm and go solo. Since then, with a variety of unique design and installation projects, Wassmann has been transmitting his own distinct signal and charting a trajectory all his own... READ MORE

About
Heidi
| | | |
What's Swiss, with 12 faces, spans a generation or two and yodels? Introducing Heimweh the latest Swiss Miss project. You might remember our Alpine gals--Eliane and Andra Borlo who brought a unique spin to traditional Swiss folk music--well forget the spin --here's a veritable Russian roulette of twelve Swiss singers whose styles and backgrounds redefine the word gamut. Or the idea of a "Swiss Miss" for that matter. So just in case you thought you knew Heidi, think again--this Swiss Miss is part Nigerian and she's from Valais; she's a human beat box, she's got reggae and blues; she's knows her bossanova; she is Asian; her soul is Brazilian; she's a ballerina; she's a vamp; a Wise Woman and she tangos... ABOUT
BASEL
| | | |
This season, Switzerland Tourism focuses on Basel, one of the host cities of the ongoing Euro Cup--and also Switzerland's premier cultural center. The city at the Rheinknie (Rhine's knee - name of geographical curves in the Rhine river) in the three-country corner to Germany and France is brimming with charm. The old part of town with its lanes and alleys is absolutely enchanting, and shopping almost becomes a cultural event here... MORE ABOUT BASEL

Congratulations to Dominique Rollin, 'The Horse'--of the Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team, who won the formidable Ricola Twilight Criterium in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, on May 28th. The 40-mile mid-week criterium is known as one of the most difficult criteriums in the country due to its technical nature and tough uphill finish on the one-mile circuit. 'After crashing in the final two laps at the Tour of Somerville Criterium a couple of days before, I was really motivated for a win' said Rollin. 'I followed the Team Type 1 lead-out train the final lap and just overpowered them up the hill for the win.' VISIT RICOLA ONLINE
