On top of everything else it does, Apple’s popular iPhone now has an innovative new application to educate people firsthand about the effects of global warming in Switzerland’s Jungfrau region. Called the Jungfrau Climate Guide, the application was created by scientists at the University of Bern’s Oeschger Center for Climate Change Research. It uses GPS tracking to map seven "Climate Trails". As people hike these trails, the Climate Guide offers audio and video clips and interactive maps to point out the visible effects of climate change (such as rockfall, glacier lake formations, flooding).
Europe's largest glacier system, the Jungfrau region is particularly vulnerable to global warming. Visitors can download the application onto their own iPhones, or rent one of 90 iPhones available through Jungfrau tourist offices. The application was developed as part of the Jungfrau Climate Charter, whose aim is to raise awareness of and mitigate the effects of climate change in the region.
